Please use this place as more of an escape from the the realities of life, less of an outlet for your frustrations with them.

Having gone through Oppo from the past several days I’ve noticed the amount of personal problems being brought up, particularly by some younger members, has been a little high as of late.

I’m not saying it’s not cool to vent here. Every once in a while is fine, but some people bring too much baggage here to have any fun and thereby are a bit of a downer to all of us. In doing so you are dwelling far too much on the negative and only making yourselves feel worse about whatever the situation may be.

Please, use Oppo to more as a brief break from your problems, you’ll feel better in the short term and clearing your mind from your issues and having a little fun here will help you get life sorted out well in the long term.

Keep Oppo cars, keep Oppo weird, keep Oppo fun.

But yeah, I think for many people it’s easier to reach out to a forum like this for sympathy than speak to someone in real life. I think we do a good job of suggesting professional help when someone’s gotten too low. And if not, or I’ve missed something, do feel free to point out politely to specific people that the forum isn’t licensed for psychological help.

That last bit, there are a couple that definitely need to read that and take it to heart. Sadly, I don’t think I’m even qualified to tell people as much though because I fear telling them they need that type of help could send them into a further downward spiral instead of helping them to get better. Psych issues are tough...

I certainly don’t read every post, ain’t nobody got time fo’ dat. As I said above, I’m not against all personal posts: “I’m not saying it’s not cool to vent here. Most of the time Oppo is just better used as a distraction than an outlet, that’s all I’m trying to say here.

Sorry but im going to slightly disagree.

For a lot of the younger people, myself included, its a lot easier to come here and speak to people, many of which know what we are going through, than to talk with our parents. I for one dont have any older friends in real life, and my teenage friends can only be of so much help.

I understand and appreciate your concerns with regards to some of the content that has been popping up here of late. It’s something that the mod group has been having a great deal of conversation about, and doing a great deal about as well.

If there is a particular issue that concerns you, let us know either in the comments (you can find an older comment of ours to reply to if you want to keep it out of the main line) or shoot us an email at oppomoderator@gmail.com; please do not make posts like this, however, that publicly call out a targeted subset of commenters. This sort of thing rarely helps.

In my experience, the most effective way to alter the behavior of others in this context is not to tell them what to do nor or not do, but rather to set an example using your own behavior. If you want others to be excellent to each other, then be excellent to those around you, and let others take note of that and emulate that behavior for themselves.

If you upgrade to the Jalopnik Gold: Oppo Edition Package we can get you at least three Mod PSAs per quarter. Otherwise you’re stuck with the plebeian Opponaut PSAs.

Understood. I just feel like it came off a little preachy. I agree to an extent that some of the younger Oppos can get a little spamy with their “problems”. Part of me wishes I had a forum like this when I was in my late teens to get some outside perspective. On several occasions I have offered up advice to a young lad having problems and I’d like to think it helped, even just a little.

Hey PJ. While I was hoping it wouldn’t draw one, I was kind of expecting a response like this at some point. By the way, my screen-name here was Biased Plies here until a couple of days ago, we’ve conversed before actually, I think I was a little harsh to Denver last time.

I was hoping this wouldn’t draw the ire of mods because I didn’t call out anyone specifically, which is obviously no bueno, see our last conversation. Other than headline meant to draw the attention of the appropriate people, this post doesn’t really call anyone out anyway. It means to suggest a better, perhaps healthier way of dealing with personal problems that are relatively menial, by using Oppo to escape from them, rather than focussing on them by venting here. Everyone is different of course but taking a brief break and distracting oneself by coming here is just a better way to deal with stuff, in my experience.

I do generally try to be excellent to those around me, however when you want to dissuade someone or a group of people from a certain behaviour, it is difficult to lead by example by not exhibiting said habit. In this case, by not complaining, people may think I/We don’t have the problems they do and thus don’t complain, giving them no reason not to complain themselves. In this case, I still think suggesting an alternate way to deal with problems was the best way to go about it.

I won’t make this a point of contention in the future and I won’t go around berating others for doing what I’ve asked them not to. I’ve said my bit, I’m clearly not alone in my opinion and I just hope some of my sentiments will stick with those I’ve addressed.
